Tesla Model Y L (6-seat) launches in the US: what it does (and doesn't) mean for a French referral
Tesla launched the Model Y L, a 6-seat, longer-wheelbase variant, in the US on 2 July 2026. Here's the state of its French availability and what it means for the referral.
What just launched: the Model Y L
On 2 July 2026, Tesla launched the Model Y L in the US and Puerto Rico (Electrek): a 6-seat variant in a 2+2+2 layout, roughly 180 mm longer than the standard Model Y, with a claimed range of about 325 miles (US EPA cycle). The launch trim ("Launch Series") is priced at $61,990.
Is it sold in France?
As of publication, we found no official Tesla announcement of a European or French rollout for the Model Y L: the 2 July launch is US-market only. Unconfirmed for France — we'll update this page the day Tesla opens French orders, exactly as we do for every program change.
Where does the referral fit in?
The French referral today covers the "standard" Model Y (RWD / Long Range RWD) built in Berlin: 2000 km or €250. If Tesla ever opens French orders for the Model Y L, two unknowns remain to verify before promising anything: the production site (the current eligibility condition for the eco bonus) and whether this new body style is actually folded into the French referral program. We're not guessing either.
The full US price range, for context only — not a France reference
Useful for understanding where the model sits, the full 2026 Model Y US range, all-in with $1,640 in fees, runs from the Standard RWD at $41,630 up to the Model Y L at $63,630 (Cars.com). These dollar figures, before VAT and the French bonus écologique, don't translate directly into a France price.
Even if it arrives, the eco bonus is unlikely — and price is the reason
There is a question underneath "will it come to France", and it is worth answering now rather than on the day orders open: if a French Model Y L existed, would it qualify for the bonus écologique? On what is currently knowable, probably not — and the binding constraint is not the one people expect.
The bonus imposes two hard limits on the car itself: a purchase price below €47,000 and a mass not exceeding 2,400 kg. Set the US launch price of $61,990 against that price ceiling and the gap is not marginal. European pricing is set separately and a dollar figure does not convert into a French one, but a variant launched well above the standard Model Y would have to be positioned very differently here to land under €47,000 — and the standard French Model Y is itself only eligible in specific trims below that line.
The mass limit is the one nobody checks, and it is the one a six-seat, longer-wheelbase variant is most exposed to. A car that is longer, carries a third row and gains the structure to support it does not get lighter. We are not going to publish a figure for a car with no French homologation — that figure does not exist yet — but a reader assuming the L would simply inherit the standard Model Y's bonus status should know there are two independent ways for it not to.
The assembly question is the one to ask, and it comes before both
Ahead of price and mass sits the éco-score, which is an origin test: it scores material extraction, battery manufacture, assembly and transport to the point of sale. The French Model Y qualifies because it is built in Berlin. The Model Y L launched from the US.
So the correct question for anyone tracking this is narrower and more useful than "when does it come to France": where would a French-market Model Y L be built? A Berlin-built L could plausibly inherit the eligibility route the standard car uses; an imported one would face the éco-score on its own terms, with transport distance counted against it. That single fact would settle more than any price rumour, and it is not something Tesla has announced.
None of this affects the referral, which is why we keep the two apart. The referral benefit does not depend on assembly site, price or mass — but whether the Model Y L is folded into the French programme at all is a separate unknown, and we are not guessing at it either.
