60,000-Supercharger network and a paid membership in the US: what a French owner should know

The North American Supercharger network has passed 60,000 stalls, and Tesla now offers a $12.99/month Charging Membership there. Here's what it means for a French owner, at home or travelling in the US.

What's confirmed in North America

The North American Supercharger network now exceeds 60,000 stalls, with full Model Y access. Tesla there offers a Charging Membership at $12.99/month, which lowers the per-kWh rate and pays for itself from roughly 4 charging sessions a month (source).

Does this apply in France?

Not directly: this $12.99/month "Charging Membership" is a North American program with its own terms. France runs its own Supercharging membership system, with its own rates, verifiable only live in the Tesla app — we deliberately never publish a fixed French rate (see our page on the cost of charging in France, built on an explicit working assumption, never an official Tesla figure).

If you're driving your French Tesla in the US

Your Tesla account is global, but charging rates and membership terms stay regional. Before a US trip with your France-registered car: check in the app whether a local membership is offered for your visit, and don't assume a French rate applies on the other side of the Atlantic — or vice versa.

The referral itself doesn't change

This charging membership is entirely separate from the referral: the 2000 km of Supercharging (or €250) earned via a referral link are used normally, whether or not a charging membership is active, in France or elsewhere.

Why a subscription price doesn't transfer between countries

The natural reflex on reading "$12.99 a month" is to convert it to euros and ask whether you'd sign. That's the wrong sum, and not only because of the exchange rate. What makes a charging subscription worth having is never its price: it is the per-kWh gap between the member and non-member rate in that market, multiplied by the kWh you actually put in at fast chargers each month. Two countries can carry the same monthly fee over per-kWh gaps that differ by a factor of two — and so have break-even points with nothing in common.

Which gives you a method you can run yourself, on numbers only you hold:

1. Pull your Supercharging kWh for the last three months from the app and average them per month. That figure is the one nobody else can estimate for you.
2. At a charger you actually use, note the difference between the member and non-member rate, per kWh.
3. Multiply the two. If the result beats the monthly fee, the subscription pays for your use; if it doesn't, it doesn't.

The sum takes two minutes and survives a change in rates — unlike a threshold of the "worth it from X sessions a month" kind, which rests on an average session size the writer picked on your behalf.

What "60,000 stalls" doesn't tell you

A continental total is a communications figure: useful for tracking a trajectory, useless for planning a drive. What decides your trip is the number of stalls on your route, their power, and the odds of queueing at the hour you pass through. A busy corridor can be poorly served in a country with a dense network, and comfortable in one with a modest network.

The car's own trip planner already works at that scale: it places stops on the actual route, with the arrival state of charge for each. It is the only projection that has your car, your departure and your destination in it — and it outranks any national total, ours included.

Before a trip: the checklist

• Check the Supercharger rate live in the app, on site — never a figure remembered from another country.
• See whether a local membership (like the North American Charging Membership) is offered for your stay.
• Remember that your referral km or € stay usable independently of any such membership.
